The Western Aquaduct Project (approximately 08h30 – 12h30)

The Western Aquaduct Project (which is already well underway) willconsist of some 75 km of welded steel pipeline with diameters ranging from 1,0 m up to 1,6 m. The pipeline will bring potable water to eThekwini Water & Sanitation's Western area at a cost of R800 million.

The route followed will include Umlaas Road, Inchanga, Drummond, Hillcrest, Kloof, New Germany and Mount Moriah. Thanks to the large height difference between our western and eastern boundaries hydro power will be generated at Wyebank and Hillcrest.

Emphasis is being placed on minimal disturbance to the environment and to residents and for this reason extensive use of pipe-jacking is being used.

Participants are requested to wear comfortable walking shoes and attire.

The Mzimkhulu Estuary and River (approximately 08h30 – 16h00)

Here procedures to determine the Ecological Water Requirements (Reserve) will be demonstrated and explained.

This would include some collection of specimens to illustrate how this is done, the  main emphasis will be the explanation of how to determine the quantity and quality of water that is required to keep the estuary in the required state.

Tour participants will travel to the Oribi Gorge where a demonstration on how the Ecological Water Requirements for the Mzimkhulwana River are determined.
It may also be possible to allocate an hour for a walk in the gorge forest.

Participants are requested to wear comfortable walking shoes and attire.

Cotswold Downs (approximately 08h30 – 12h30)

Cotswold Downs is an upmarket housing development and golf course, and was recently recognized as the best managed eco-estate.

Over 15 000 indigenous shrubs and trees have been planted and the wetlands have been restored enticing over 100 species of birds to take up residence on the estate. This is a great bonus to the estate’s environmental goals.

In consultation with the eThekwini Municipality the estate’s developers have built the country’s first privately owned and run regional sewage plant for the estate at a cost of R6, 5 million. It provides millions of litres of purified water for the 18-hole golf course.
